Prevention of Soil Pollution to Keep the World Growing

from:

Soil pollution is a growing concern in many countries. Polluted soil can be quite devastating on an agricultural level as well as for anyone exposed to the polluted soil. This growing concern requires good measures of prevention of soil pollution.

Through understanding the causes of soil pollution we can better see how to prevent it. It also helps to pinpoint what effects soil pollution has upon plants, animals and humans. Having an overall understanding makes prevention of soil pollution easier.

Concerns About Soil Pollution

The concerns about soil pollution revolve around the major effects it has. Soil pollution has been found to be a carcinogen which means it is linked to causing cancer.

Lead pollution in soil is a concern for children since their bodies can not get rid of excess lead. Excess lead in the body leads to serious health problems and defects.

Soil pollution is also linked to water pollution and air pollution. Contaminated soil can easily cause both other types of pollution.

Causes of Soil Pollution

Soil pollution is caused by the introduction of a harmful substance. This can happen in a few different ways.

Harmful substances may be introduced to the soil through water that has been in contact with the soil. It can come from run off from waste or dumping sites. It can occur from the use of chemicals on crops.

No matter how it happens, soil pollution is difficult to remedy. It is better to focus on the prevention of soil pollution as the best remedy for the situation.

Prevention of Soil Pollution

The prevention of soil pollution involves many layers of work. Mostly through legislation that involves preventing dumping or ensuring proper dumping of harmful substance soil pollution is prevented. Other methods of prevention include banning some use of chemicals on agricultural fields.

If prevention is not possible there are also standards in place for clean up of polluted soil. Soil can be aerated which means breaking it up to allow for the evaporation of the harmful substance. This comes with a risk of air pollution though.

Another method is excavation where the contaminated soil is taken away. This can work quite well but it is essential to ensure all contamination is removed or the efforts will not work.

Thermal or heat applies to the soil to kill the harmful substance may also work in some situations. Lastly, capping off the soil, which involves covering it may be the only ting to do. This will at least keep it from being used, having people or animals come in contact with it or have the harmful substances released into the air.
