A Career In Heating And Air Conditioning

from:

As heating and air conditioning systems within houses and businesses become more and more complex, additional skills are needed to repair, install and design these new models and systems. A vocational training program that allows students to learn the basics as well as the advanced information needed to working within the heating and air conditioning field is a great option for those that are interested in getting into a very lucrative and high demand sector, or those that want to start their own company or service industry.

Typically degree programs or certificates in this area will be categorized under the term of HVACR or heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. Students taking these courses can focus in on specific areas of interest such as heating and air conditioning throughout the course of studies. In addition there is also further specialization within HVACR programs with regards to working on commercial units or residential units, although basic course will provide students with an excellent foundation for working with both types. There are several levels of courses offered at most technical and vocations schools ranging from an Associate in Applied Science degree in HVACR to a HVACR Installation or Repair certificate program.

Throughout the various courses, students will not just sit in class and listen, they will also be provided laboratory and real world experiences in the fields of heating and air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration. Students may complete apprenticeship programs and practical work experience as part of the certification or degree program, depending on the type of course that they are completing. Graduates will have experience in working on all aspects of these systems including testing, troubleshooting, electrical repair and wiring, carbon monoxide testing and computer systems as they relate to temperature control and heating and air conditioning systems.

Professionals working in the heating and air conditioning area can expect to make different annual incomes depending on where they are located and how much experience and education they have. Work is generally either by contract or by hour, with hourly wages averaging between fifteen and seventeen dollars for beginning to mid level HVACR technicians and those with experience typically earning over twenty dollars per hour. Jobs are more available in larger centers and obviously in higher demand in larger population centers, although there is still a constant and steady demand for HVACR even in smaller more rural area. Large companies and manufacturing plants often employ their own repair and maintenance professionals and this can be a great opportunity to work up through the ranks into HVACR management positions.
